LEAGUE TWO LOWDOWN: PART ONE

2 June 2016

A look at Pompey's 2016/17 opponents

ACCRINGTON STANLEY

It was a case of so near, yet so far for Accrington last season, as failure to beat Stevenage on the final day saw them miss out on automatic promotion.

They then suffered an extra-time defeat to AFC Wimbledon – who grabbed the final spot in League One – in the play-offs.

Manager: John Coleman

Distance from Fratton Park: 275.1 miles

Estimated drive time: 4 hours 29 minutes

2015/16 position: 4th in League Two

Pompey v Accrington last season: D 0-0 (H), W 3-1 (A)

BARNET

It was a comfortable first season back in the Football League for Barnet, who secured a mid-table finish.

They are led by former Pompey midfielder Martin Allen, who made 46 appearances during his time at Fratton Park in 1990s.

BLACKPOOL

Pompey fans can empathise with the fate of their Blackpool counterparts, who saw their side relegated to the fourth tier last term having played Premier League football as recently as 2011.

That led to the departure of Neil McDonald as manager, with Gary Bowyer becoming their eighth boss in the past four years.

Manager: Gary Bowyer

Estimated drive time: 4 hours 35 minutes

2015/16 position: 22nd in League One

CAMBRIDGE UNITED

Cambridge were unable to break into the play-offs last season, despite ending the campaign with an eight-match unbeaten run.

Pompey have won their past five meetings with United and netted nine times on their two most recent visits to the Abbey Stadium.

CARLISLE UNITED

A play-off berth looked on the cards for the Cumbrians at one stage of the season before they eventually had to settle for 10th spot.

But that is still some achievement when you consider that terrible flooding in December meant they had to play ‘home’ games at Preston, Blackburn and Blackpool.
