BURGESS: WE MUST MOVE ON

2 March 2016

Defender already looking ahead

Christian Burgess says that Pompey have to put their Exeter heartache behind them.

The Blues were heading for victory at St James Park after Conor Chaplin’s neat finish gave them an interval lead.

Ollie Watkins struck at the death, however, to ensure a share of the spoils and leave the visitors feeling frustrated.

But with successive away trips to Stevenage and Accrington on the horizon, Burgess does not want to dwell too much on the past.

The defender said: “We need to be able to see those kind of games out, but we didn’t and it’s extremely disappointing.

“You’ve never done enough until the final whistle goes, so we just have to move past this and look ahead to the next game.

“It was a great, instinctive strike from Conor and that should have been enough for us, but we allowed them to come on to us too much at the end.

“There was too much pressure from Exeter and it paid off for them, but that’s happened too many times now.

“Our keeper played well and made a couple of good saves, but things just don’t seem to be going our way at the moment.

“We have to stay positive and look to just put the game behind us because there’s nothing we can do to change it now.

“It’s going to be another tough challenge for us at Stevenage on Saturday and we’ve got to try to turn the tide.

“It’s the stage of the season where you need to start putting pressure on the sides above you and we can only do that by winning games.”
