SMITH: WE'RE READY FOR NEWPORT

11 March 2016

Striker only focusing on County clash

Michael Smith was part of a side that eased to victory at fellow promotion contenders Accrington.

And now he wants to help Pompey give the Fratton faithful plenty to cheer by beating Newport this weekend.

Their opponents have recovered from a terrible start to the campaign and now sit 19th in the League Two table.

The Blues, meanwhile, are chasing promotion, but Smith is not looking past the clash with County.

The striker said: “We’re taking each game as it comes – Tuesday’s gone now and we’ve just got to focus on Newport.

“It’s important that you concentrate on the next one that comes along and we want to pick up all three points on Saturday.

“We’re four unbeaten and we want to get a positive result in front of our home fans so everyone’s happy.

“We’ve watched clips on Newport and know what they’re all about, so we’ll be fully prepared for whatever they throw at us.

“It’s important that we stay professional for the full 90 minutes and the gaffer’s keeping everyone grounded.”

Smith played in front of Kyle Bennett, Gary Roberts and Gareth Evans at Accrington and rates the trio highly.

He said: “We’ve got some great attacking players and you can see from some of the things they do that they’re a class above.

“It makes it easier for you as a striker because you know they’re going to provide you with chances to score.”
