ROBERTS: CONFIDENCE IS HIGH

18 November 2016

Midfielder upbeat ahead of Cheltenham clash

Pompey will look to record a third successive league win when they visit Cheltenham on Saturday.

And Gary Roberts insists that the players are in confident mood ahead of their trip to Whaddon Road.

The Blues have exited both the FA Cup and Checkatrade Trophy, but are well-placed to mount a promotion push.

Now Roberts is hoping the Robins can be added to Cambridge and Mansfield in their list of recent league scalps.

The midfielder said: “Two wins and two clean sheets on the spin is always nice, but this is a different game and we have to keep our focus.

“Cheltenham did well to come back up into the Football League and it’s going to be a tough match for us.

“Our priority is the league and we’ll go into the fixture full of confidence and looking to pick up another victory.

“It’s a massive week for us now with three huge games, but the mood throughout the squad is upbeat.

“We have a good set of lads here and you can see that when you look around the training ground.

“The fans have also been great and we’ll take our full allocation to Cheltenham, so hopefully we can get a positive result for them.”

Roberts is Pompey’s top scorer with seven goals and four of those have come from the spot – with a further effort from 12 yards against Barnet saved.

He said: “There was a bit of a dodgy one at Exeter, but the others have all been stonewall penalties.

“I’m not arguing. If you’re struggling to score and then the referee points to the spot then you want to put it away. It’s my job to step up and try to keep a cool head.”
