Defender looking forward to Wycombe test

Fans could be forgiven for a sense of deja vu when Pompey host Wycombe in the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday.

They beat the Chairboys 4-2 in a league meeting at Fratton Park that took place just two months ago.

A magical goal from Conor Chaplin was the highlight that day, while Christian Burgess, Gary Roberts and Carl Baker were also on target.

Now Enda Stevens is targeting another victory against Gareth Ainsworth’s side, as the Blues look to book their place in round two.

The left-back said: “The FA Cup’s the best domestic competition in football and it’s a change from the league, so we’re looking forward to it.

“It’s a tough test against Wycombe. They came to Fratton in the league and gave us a very good game in the first half.

“It was an exciting contest and hopefully it will be the same again on Saturday – with a similar outcome as well.

“We had a good run last season and we want to do that again this time around. It would be nice to get to the third round and draw a big team.

“That winning feeling at home was something we enjoyed a lot earlier in the season and we want to get it back again.”

Pompey go into the game on the back of an impenetrable defensive display that saw them win at Cambridge last week.

Stevens said: “The sending off gave them a leg up and then it was up to us to see out the rest of the game and keep a clean sheet.

“I thought we did that excellently because there were a lot of balls sent into the box. We had to dig in deep.”
