MAIN HAILS EXCELLENT BLUES

3 September 2016

Goal hero praises team display

Curtis Main was delighted to see the perfect marriage of performance and result against Crawley.

The striker bagged a brace as Pompey swept aside their opponents with a fantastic footballing feast in the first half at Fratton Park.

His strikes sandwiched a fourth goal in three games for the in-form Gary Roberts to ensure the points were wrapped up before half-time.

And Main was thrilled that the Blues’ attractive passing game was able to yield a maximum haul.

The summer signing said: “It was a good day’s work. We got a brilliant result thanks to a fantastic team performance and it was just what we needed.

“You’re not going to be brilliant every single week and we’ve been grinding out results recently.

“But I thought we were excellent against Crawley and were able to back that up by taking our chances when they came.

“We set a really good tempo from the first whistle and knew we had to be at it all over the pitch, not allowing them to settle. They weren’t able to cope with that.

“We moved the ball really well, created space and really cut them open. It was a nice cut-back for my first goal and I was able to tuck it away.

“I would like to have got the matchball and it wasn’t to be, but three points and a clean sheet are more important.”

Main led the line for Pompey and knew he had to impress, with Conor Chaplin, Noel Hunt and Michael Smith all waiting on the bench.

He said: “The competition’s good because it pushes you and makes you want to constantly raise your level.

“There are team-mates snapping at my heels, so I can’t take my place for granted and have to work hard to keep it.”
