BURGESS: DON’T LET UP

Defender urges Blues to keep going

There were plenty of celebrations in the away end at Victoria Park on Saturday.

A large army of travelling fans could embark on the long trip home from Hartlepool having watched their side secure a 2-0 victory.

Goals from Kal Naismith and Gary Roberts saw the Blues boost their automatic promotion credentials with just six games remaining.

And Christian Burgess does not want to see anyone take their foot off the accelerator until the job is done.

The defender said: “It’s important to keep building on this momentum that we’re gathering.

“We certainly can’t afford to get complacent because there are sides immediately below us on good runs as well.

“It’s another huge game in front of our own fans against Yeovil next Saturday and hopefully we can carry on where we left off.

“There are six games to go and we know anything can happen, but we’re determined to just keep winning.

“You don’t know what the teams around you are going to do, so we have to stay focused on ourselves and try to be consistent.”

Burgess admits that Pompey did not have it all their own way in the north-east, but felt their effort was rewarded.

He said: “It was a great performance from the lads, although not in the typical way that we’d like.

“Hartlepool provided us with a tough test and were very impressive in the first half, so it was important that we stood up to that.

“The players all worked really hard and there were times when we had our backs against the wall.

“Perhaps we’ve learnt a few things from what happened last season and we seem to be a bit more clinical.

“The clean sheet was also very pleasing and the more of them we can keep, the better chance we have of winning games.”
