JACK: WE'RE ON OUR WAY BACK

19 April 2017

Whatmough thrilled with promotion success

It is easy to forget that Jack Whatmough is only 20-years-old.

The defender is the longest-serving member of Pompey’s squad, having made his senior debut back in 2013.

So he can arguably appreciate the Blues’ promotion triumph more than any of his team-mates.

Whatmough watched the club’s dramatic decline as he progressed through the academy and has now played a part in their reawakening.

He said: “I’ve seen how far we’ve fallen, so to start going back up again is such an incredible feeling.

“I’ve been here since I was 11 and it’s great that after all those downs, I’ve helped get the club back up again.

“It’s unbelievable. Promotion was everyone’s target, so now that we’ve achieved that, we can start to focus on next season.

“I had a few friends in the crowd at Notts County, who came over to have a little cuddle after the game.

“The celebrations at the end with the fans, the players, the directors, the staff and the chairman were incredible.

“You could see how much it meant to everyone who’s involved with this club. It’s a special moment for Portsmouth Football Club.

“We’ll still put pressure on ourselves to perform to the level we’re capable of in the remaining games, but everyone’s so happy.”
