Dion Donohue is excited about the chance to pull on a Pompey shirt.
The capture from Chesterfield will have to be patient, however, as he was not signed in time to make his debut against Walsall this weekend.
But the 23-year-old – who can play in midfield or at the back – hopes he will not have to wait much longer to make his Blues bow.
And Donohue believes that a move to Fratton Park is a step up in his fledgling football career.
He said: “It was the start of the week when I got the phone call to say that Portsmouth were interested.
"I’m just excited – and grateful – to be here and I can’t wait to get the blue shirt on."
“I obviously replied that I wanted to come and then it hit me that the move was actually going to happen.
“Now I’m just excited – and grateful – to be here and I can’t wait to get the blue shirt on. This is a massive club and a great opportunity.
“I’ve had two seasons in League One, so I know the division and I’m sure that we’re going to do well.
“It’s definitely the right time for me to kick on and further my career – and I’m delighted this is the place where I can do that.”
Donohue is a versatile addition to Pompey’s squad and is happy to provide cover for different positions.
He said: “I was originally a central midfielder, but have filled in at left-back for the past two years at Chesterfield and have got quite used to it.
“I’m more of a forward thinking type of player and I like getting up the pitch when I can.
“It’s nice to know that I can play in other positions because you never know when you’re going to have to fill in.”
