All you need to know about Carabao Cup clash

8 August 2017

Pompey put their league hopes to one side this evening, as clubs up and down the country start out on the road to Wembley.

Kenny Jackett’s side travel to South Wales to face Cardiff from the Championship in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

It was certainly a memorable occasion for the Blues the last time that the two teams met in cup competition.

May 17 2008 is a day that will live long in the memory for fans, as Kanu’s goal at Wembley ensured that Pompey lifted the FA Cup.

Back then it was Welsh outfit who were the lower tier side, but the roles are reversed at Cardiff City Stadium.

The Blues have played there twice since City moved from their old Ninian Park home and lost both of those Championship encounters.

They did win when the sides last faced off in the League Cup, however, courtesy of a Yakubu brace in November 2004.

Both teams exited in the first round 12 months ago, but tonight one will progress to the next stage – and who knows where that could lead?

TEAM NEWS
Tareiq Holmes-Dennis and Milan Lalkovic have both picked up injuries in recent days to join Matt Clarke and Nathan Thompson on the sidelines.

Pompey will also be without Jamal Lowe, who starts a three-match ban following his red card against Rochdale.

Cardiff are expected to make multiple changes to the side that won at Burton on Saturday, while Kadeem Harris and Rhys Healey are both suffering from long-term injuries.
