McGee: I'll Repay Your Faith In Me

Keeper looks ahead to Oxford clash

11 August 2017

Pompey goalkeeper Luke McGee

He made the switch from the bright lights of the Premier League to sign for Pompey earlier this summer.

But Luke McGee had no hesitation about swapping his role as a Tottenham back-up stopper to become the Blues’ number one.

The reaction of the crowd ahead of last Saturday’s opening match against Rochdale convinced the 21-year-old he had made the right choice.

And he is keen to prove to the club that they made the correct decision to bring him to Fratton Park.

McGee said: “As soon I came out of the tunnel I could hear the fans and see that they were right behind us. That gives us a massive advantage.

“I think you can see already that the foundations are in place for us to have a successful season.

“The first thing I need to do is repay the trust that the club and the gaffer have put in me – hopefully I can do that as quickly as possible.

“It’s an added pressure knowing that you’ve got to come in and do a job, but I’m comfortable with that.

“I was at Peterborough on loan last season and although that doesn’t make you immune to mistakes, it’s good that I know this league well.”

McGee kept a clean sheet on his league debut and will be hoping for a similar outcome at Oxford this weekend.

He said: “You can look at every team and concentrate on their strengths ahead of a game.

“But that doesn’t really matter. We’re focusing on what we can do and the problems that we can give them.

“All of us are big believers of trusting our own game and we know just what we need to do against Oxford.”
