Winger lauds team performance
Kyle Bennett felt Pompey showcased both sides of their game against Blackpool.
They were totally dominant in the first half and arguably deserved to lead by more than Gareth Evans’ strike at the break.
But when the visitors improved after the restart, the Blues dealt with whatever was thrown at them with some solid defending.
That allowed Eoin Doyle to wrap up the three points with his first goal for the club deep into stoppage-time.
And Bennett was thrilled that Pompey were able to secure the result that their performance warranted.
The winger said: “You could see we were all on the same page as a team and looking to play on the front foot.
“I think Blackpool got a rocket at the break, which was obvious because I felt we were by far the better side.
“It was a great team performance in the first 45, although we knew they’d be stronger in the second half.
“They came out all guns blazing, but we defended really well and that’s 13 clean sheets for the season now. Our back five were magnificent at the end.
“Eoin works his socks off and is a great lad to have here, so it’s nice that he managed to get his first goal for us.
“We’ve worked hard on the training ground and we know that when we score first this season, we go on to win.
“It means teams have to be more expansive and we can try to open them up, so we have to keep doing that.”
The victory saw Pompey move up one place to fifth in the League Two standings, but Bennett knows there is plenty more work to do.
He said: “It’s another win chalked off. We’re past 50 points now, so I think we’re safe from relegation!
“But we need to keep ticking those off and not get carried away. We can’t get ahead of ourselves and just want to look forward to the next one.
“You can look at the table and get caught up in it all, but the mindset has to be taking it one game at a time.”
