COOK: PLAYERS DESERVE PRAISE

14 February 2017

Boss revels in Blackpool win

It was the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for the Pompey fans packed inside Fratton Park.

Those who had eschewed romantic meals with their loved ones were instead presented with another three-point haul.

Goals from Gareth Evans and Eoin Doyle secured a 2-0 victory over Blackpool and fifth spot in the League Two table.

And Paul Cook was delighted with the efforts of his players at both ends of the pitch.

The Blues boss said: “I thought Kyle Bennett and Gary Roberts were excellent – they were both absolutely terrific.

“You saw what Eoin gives us – it’s not just about the goals, but his all-round play and intelligence. He’s a really top player.

“Everything we did was good and everything about us was strong. I really enjoyed watching us play.

“If you’re going to be passing team then you have to be brave with the ball and our lads deserve all the plaudits.

“Blackpool stretched us in the second half and put us under pressure, but we did really well in the first and controlled the game.

“We always looked a threat on the break and defended solidly, so it was a great night for us overall.

“It was lovely to see the ground rocking like that. It’s a special atmosphere under the lights and the fans were fantastic.”

The result meant that Pompey secured successive league wins for the first time since November, but Cook does not want his side to stop there.

He said: “Now we’ve got a massive game at Barnet. We’ll take our fantastic support there and look to keep this run going.

“We’re fit, we’re strong and we’re scoring goals, so now we need to get that third win in a week.”
