Striker off the mark against Blackpool

Eoin Doyle was brought to Pompey to score goals.

So it was a relief for the striker to open his account in a 2-0 victory over Blackpool at Fratton Park.

It came in the fifth and final minute of stoppage-time and helped the Blues secure a deserved three-point haul.

Not that the on-loan Irishman expected to receive the ball back from Carl Baker after the Blues had broken quickly up the pitch.

He explained: “I wasn’t confident that he was going to square it and I made my run for the rebound, so it was nice when he slipped me in.

“I could have had three goals before it and it was disappointing that I couldn’t take those chances.

“But it was nice to get it in the last second of the game and the place was absolutely rocking afterwards.

“It’s an absolutely massive result for us to back up the three points we got against Accrington at the weekend.

“It was a tough fixture against a Blackpool side who were also on the back of a great result, so we knew it would be difficult.

“But we came out with a high tempo and kept that going for most of the game. I think we deserved the three points.”

Doyle is happy with his role leading the line for Pompey in front of a trio of attacking midfielders.

He said: “I’ve played that system before under the gaffer and with Gary Roberts, so I know where I need to be to get on the end of his passes.

“Kyle Bennett, Carl Baker and Jamal Lowe all have an eye for a pass as well, so it makes it easier for me.”

Great performance from the boys! @eoindoyle88 congrats on your first goal mate🔵🤙🏽 onto Saturday!
