Striker welcomes the pressure of promotion battle

Pompey fans are desperate for their side to escape League Two at the fourth time of asking.

There has been a nervous energy around Fratton Park at times this season when the Blues have not taken an early lead.

So it could be easy to blame that strong desire for success on a recent drop to seventh in the table.

But Noel Hunt welcomes the hunger for promotion and will continue to enjoy his football on the south coast.

The striker said: “There’s a massive pressure because of the expectancy at this club – everyone here understands that.

“But I believe you’ll do a lot better if you stay positive and that’s the way that I’ve always been.

“We’re very lucky to do what we do and so you’ve got to play with a smile on your face, while making sure we keep to the standard that’s required of us.

“I’ve spoken to people who have played here before and I’ve been at big clubs in the past, so it’s all part of the excitement for me.

“I love performing in front of big crowds – the more people who are there the better as far as I’m concerned.

“I’ve played for clubs where it’s okay to be mid-table, but that’s not for me. I want to get promotions under my belt.”

Hunt was an unused substitute for last Saturday’s defeat at Wycombe, but saw enough from the bench to suggest it might be different against Accrington this weekend.

He said: “It was a disappointing result, but a pretty decent performance and we were very positive.

“We had more clear-cut chances than them, so if we stay at that same pace against Accrington then I believe that we’ll be fine.

“I don’t really look at the table and think that we should just forget about everyone else and only concentrate on ourselves.”
