Hillier grabs late leveller

Pompey Ladies ended a three-match losing run in the league with a late leveller at West Ham.

Skipper Gemma Hillier struck with just four minutes remaining to deny the Premier League Southern Division strugglers a win.

It was the visitors who started brighter and Samantha Quayle hit the post, while Vicky Carelton could not get enough on Nadine Bazan’s cross.

And Carleton then drew a superb save from Hammers keeper Latoya Smith, with a shot that seemed destined for the net.

But the hosts broke the deadlock early in the second half when Molly Peters drew Courtney Trodd off her line and slotted the ball home.

The Blues immediately set about trying to find an equaliser and Sharna Capel-Watson’s chip grazed the crossbar.

But they did salvage a point late on when the ball was played back for Hillier to turn her defender and find the bottom corner.

Pompey: Trodd, Bazan (Kirby 87), Tonks, Jones, Capel-Watson, Carleton (Currie 73), Bloomfield, Sievwright, James (Stephens 73), Hillier (c), Quayle
Subs not used: Paines, Peck
