CLARKE HELPS LAY SOLID FOUNDATIONS

5 January 2017

Defender hoping to extend clean sheet record at Rovers

It is a record that has helped Pompey close the gap on the top three over the festive period.

The Blues have been extremely miserly at the back, keeping four clean sheets in their past five fixtures.

Christian Burgess and Matt Clarke were stationed at the heart of defence in all of those matches.

And the latter believes the whole team deserve credit for the firm foundations that have been established.

Clarke said: “We’re playing with a really solid base at the moment and everyone knows their jobs.

“It’s not just about the defenders, but everyone in the team. We all have to perform in our roles.

“If we do our job then it gives the attacking players a chance to go and win the game for us.

“Christian and I know what to expect of each other and I think that we’ve been working well as a partnership.

“All good teams are built on a solid platform, so we’ll keep trying to develop those relationships in the team going forward.”

Pompey face a tough test in front of the Sky Sports cameras on Thursday night against a Doncaster side sitting at the League Two summit.

Clarke said: “They’re at the top for a reason and we owe them one after they beat us at our place earlier in the season.

“We’ll be going up there looking to play well and pick up a positive result to continue our good form.

“The good thing about playing sides like Luton and Doncaster is that we know they’ll come out and give us a game.”
