Luton win shows improvement in key area
A goal at one end and clean sheet at the other.
All in all, Pompey’s 1-0 victory over Luton at Fratton Park was an extremely positive way to start 2017.
Christian Burgess grabbed the game’s only goal when he headed home from a Carl Baker free-kick before the break.
And Gareth Evans was delighted with the way the Blues dealt with set-pieces at both ends of the pitch.
The right-back said: “I thought we were excellent and the game panned out how we expected it to.
“It was always going to be a feisty affair, but we stood up to that and it was pleasing to come away with the win.
“Luton were only a point behind us going into the game, so it was important for us to show what we’re all about.
“I was pleased with how we dealt with set-pieces, both in an attacking and defensive sense.
“That was a bit of a problem for us earlier in the season and it’s something we’ve been working hard on.
“Burgess obviously scored from one of them and that’s what got us the win, so we’re really happy with that.
“We saw the other scores after the match and it’s always good when you get a positive result and not all other sides around you do.
“But the most important thing is our own performances and to keep this good run going at Doncaster on Thursday.”
