Jackett's Forward Thinking

15 July 2017

Boss impressed by striking options

It is a strike partnership already showing encouraging signs after just one game.

And Kenny Jackett hopes that Brett Pitman and Conor Chaplin can continue to link up well throughout the 2017/18 campaign.

The former netted twice in his first appearance in a Pompey shirt in a 2-0 friendly victory at Bognor.

Chaplin set up the first of those and Jackett is also pleased with the other forward options in his squad.

The Blues boss said: “It was only Brett’s second day at the club, but he played the full game and scored two, so that’s encouraging.

"There are certainly options in our strike-force and it’s all about putting the right people into the right slots."

“We were trying to get him here since I came to the club and we hope that he can form a productive forward partnership with Conor.

“But you need a squad as well and behind them you’ve got Kabamba, Smith and Main, who will all be pushing.

“There are certainly options in our strike-force and it’s all about putting the right people into the right slots.”

It was not the most entertaining contest at Nyewood Lane, but Jackett was pleased that all 11 starters got through the whole match.

He said: “The grass was a little bit long and it’s fair to say that the game didn’t really flow.

“We had a lot of the ball without really creating enough chances and the match was open all the way up to the point when we scored the second goal.

“But all 11 players got 90 minutes and that’s something they can build on through the rest of pre-season.

“Bognor were very good and played out from the back – it will be interesting to see how they do at their level.”
