Catlin delighted with Jackett appointment

It did not take long for Pompey to replace Paul Cook in the Fratton Park hot-seat.

Just a few days after his departure for Wigan, Kenny Jackett was named as the new Blues boss on a two-year deal.

The former Millwall and Wolves supremo will look to build on the momentum gathered from last season’s League Two title success.

And Mark Catlin insists that Jackett was the first choice to lead the club into the 2017/18 campaign.

Pompey’s chief executive said: “The second we knew that Paul was going to Wigan, he was always in the back of our minds.

“We didn’t mess about – we just went straight out and got him. We were very decisive.

“I discussed it with the board, but he was literally the first call I made. He was at the top of everyone’s list.”

Jackett has won promotions from League One in the past, but Catlin is more concerned with the club’s long-term prospects.

He said: “It would be great if we could do that and that’s what we eventually want him to do, but there’s no timescale on it.

“His main priority is building for the future and putting strong foundations in place, so that when we do go up it’s not a flash in the pan.”
