DOYLE WINS GOAL VOTE

3 March 2017

Accrington strike chosen for EFL Awards

Pompey fans have named Michael Doyle’s stunning volley at Accrington last March as the club’s best EFL goal of 2016.

The midfielder’s strike just pipped Conor Chaplin’s inventive lob and header against Wycombe earlier this season.

Another Chaplin goal – his acrobatic overhead effort at Blackpool – was third in the vote, with Gary Roberts and Danny Rose joint fourth for efforts against Barnet and Plymouth respectively.

Doyle’s fine finish will now represent Pompey in the Mitre Goal of the Year category at the EFL Awards.

A judging panel will review all the strikes nominated by clubs, with a selection being shown on Channel 5’s ‘Football on Five Goal Rush’.

Fans will be given the opportunity to vote for which ones make the final shortlist of five, with the overall winner being selected on the night of the EFL Awards in April.
