Pompey squad confident ahead of Grimsby test

Gareth Evans says spirits are high in the Pompey squad.

The Blues recovered from disappointing home results against Morecambe and Crewe to pick up successive victories on the road.

After climbing into the top three by beating Crawley last Tuesday, they strengthened their position with a 4-0 rout of Colchester.

And Evans wants to see Pompey continue to build momentum when they take on Grimsby at Fratton Park tonight.

He said: “There’s obviously a really good mood in the camp with the position we’re in and the last couple of results.

“Everything’s looking a lot rosier than it was at this time last week – I think it’s fair to say that.

“It seemed like the end of the world to have two matches at home and pick up just the single point.

“So to then have what appeared to be two really tough away fixtures and collect six points was so pleasing.

“But now we want to take that positivity into the Grimsby game and look to carry on this run.

“It’s been a really enjoyable season for me and hopefully it will have the finish that we’re all looking for.

“But now we’ve reached the business end, all we’re looking at is trying to win the next game.”

Evans knows that Pompey will need to beat Grimsby to keep the supporters in a buoyant mood.

He said: “With the size of this club and the reputation it has, we’re expected to have a 100 per cent record at home.

“If you don’t do that then you’re in line for criticism. That’s just the way it is when you’re at a big club like Pompey.”
