Ladies Thrash Winchester In Hampshire Cup

Blues begin their defence of the trophy

20 November 2017

Pompey Ladies began their defence of the Hampshire Cup in scintillating fashion with a 7-0 victory at Winchester.

The visitors – who are aiming to lift the trophy for a 10th time in 11 seasons – started brightly and took an early lead when Rachel Panting converted Tash Stephens' centre.

But the Blues had to remain patient, as Stephens, Charley Boswell and Panting all missed opportunities to extend the advantage.

Stephens did find the net late in the first half following a nice bit of skill from Panting, only for an assistant’s flag to halt the celebrations.

A second goal did arrive just before the whistle, however, as Samantha Quayle collected a fine Stephens pass before slotting home.

Pompey made their pressure count after the interval and Stephens deservedly got her name on the scoresheet following a quick break up the pitch.

Panting then took control, tucking in a low cross at the far post before completing her hat-trick following a period of passing play.

But the visitors were not content with just five goals and Quayle showed plenty of composure to find the target after Shannon Albuery had flicked the ball into her path.

Shannon Sievwright wrapped things up in fine fashion late on, with a long-range drive that flew in off the underside of the crossbar.

Blues boss Jay Sadler told the club’s official YouTube channel: “Coming in at 2-0 was good, but we needed to build on that in the second half.

"We knew that complacency couldn’t be an issue and we’ll just take each game as it comes in this competition."

“We went out after the break and used the ball well. We seemed to focus more and got our just rewards.

“The whole attacking quartet have got a superb relationship and I thought that Rachel was absolutely superb.

“We knew that complacency couldn’t be an issue and we’ll just take each game as it comes in this competition.

“There are a lot of positives for us to take from the game and we want to build on this momentum when we play Lewes at the weekend.”
