Ladies Lose After Late Goal At Lewes

Another frustrating defeat for Blues

18 September 2017

Pompey Ladies suffered late heartache for the second week in succession, going down 1-0 to Lewes at The Dripping Pan.

Rebecca Carter netted two minutes from the end to ensure the hosts secured all three points in a tight contest.

The Sussex side had missed an early chance to take the lead when former Blues midfielder Sarah Kempson scuffed a penalty wide following Charley Boswell’s handball.

But there was not an abundance of clear-cut opportunities at either end of the pitch, as both sides fought to take control.

Pompey did finish the first half well, though, and Gemma Hillier’s long-range effort forced Leah Samain to make a great save.

Samantha Quayle had a couple of attempts blocked after the interval before turning Shannon Sievwright’s cross wide.

And just when it looked like the spoils would be shared, Dani Lowe sent in a dangerous low delivery that Carter bundled home.

Blues boss Jay Sadler told the club’s official YouTube channel: “I’m very disappointed with the overall performance and the result as well.

“We weren’t intense enough without the ball and didn’t create many opportunities or circulate the ball like we normally do.

"Both teams were disciplined and resilient, but neither did much to break the other down."

“There were some injuries, but we’ve got a squad of players here and you expect whoever comes in to do a job. I don’t think they were good enough.

“We weren’t together as a team. When you put on a Pompey shirt you should be proud to wear it, but I think everyone has regrets.

“It’s difficult to take after losing late to Charlton the previous week. We had most of the possession in both games, but if you don’t do anything with it then you’re not going to score.

“Both teams were disciplined and resilient, but neither did much to break the other down. It was a bit flat and a drab game.

“We had a good start to the season and have now hit a bit of a wall. We’re still learning, but in this league you have to learn quickly.”

Pompey: Beazley; Currie, Boswell, Southgate, Bazan (c) (Albuery 90+1); Quayle, Barron (Clark 72), Sievwright, James (Panting 59); Stephens, Hillier
