Pre-season was rounded off with a late comeback victory against Brighton last Sunday – and now the competitive action is back.
Carla Perkins, Daisy McLachlan and Rachel Panting were all on target against the Seagulls and now Pompey Women will be looking to get off to a positive start against C&K Basildon.
The Blues will take to the pitch on Sunday in the rebranded FA Women’s National League South.
The sides met twice in the league last season and both games were thrilling encounters. Pompey lost 4-2 in the away fixture, with McLachlan and Shannon Albuery both finding the target from long-range.
Basildon then travelled to Bognor’s Nyewood Lane one week after that initial encounter in Canvey Island.
And Pompey roared back to claim the points following three successive losses, with a 2-1 victory over the then title-chasers.
They took what was a surprise lead when Sammy Quayle was fouled in the area and McLachlan fired home the spot-kick.
And it was McLachlan at the double before the break. Her superb overhead effort from the edge of the area flew past the Basildon keeper to ensure the hosts’ dominance paid off.
Angela Addison beat Mel Burns in the Blues goal just after the interval, but a swashbuckling Pompey performance was enough to earn victory.
C&K Basildon will be without last season’s top scorer Addison, who joined Tottenham over the summer.
Former captain Zoe Rushden, midfielder Jay Blackie and manager Steve Tilson have also departed the club, so the Essex-based side are in a period of transition ahead of the season opener.
Pompey, meanwhile, have had a lot to cheer about in recent weeks, following the takeover and a number of new signings.
The game will be held at Canvey Island’s Park Lane ground, which holds 4,100 and has 500 seats in the side stand. One end has a large terrace, while the pitch is below sea level.
Watch Pompey get the campaign started at Basildon on Sunday. Kick-off is 2pm and the postcode is SS8 7PX.
