All you need to know about League One clash

10 August 2018

Pompey are on the road for the first time this season as they make the long trip north to face Blackpool in League One.

Fans of the hosts were left stunned at the start of the week when Gary Bowyer stepped down as manager and his assistant Terry McPhillips will be in charge on Saturday.

There is currently plenty of uncertainty around the club, with a number of fans planning protests against the owners before the game.

It was a busy summer of arrivals and departures at Bloomfield Road, with several of last season’s regulars departing.

Blackpool began the campaign by playing out a goalless draw away at newly-promoted Wycombe, thanks largely to an impressive performance from goalkeeper Mark Howard.

They finished 12th in the third tier last term, having secured promotion – alongside Pompey – via the play-offs the previous year.

Both sides won on each other’s turf, with Kenny Jackett’s men securing a dramatic 3-2 victory in the north-west.

The Seasiders twice fought back to cancel out efforts from Brett Pitman and Ben Close, only for the former to then grab a late winner.

TEAM NEWS
Pompey will likely be without Nathan Thompson (knee), but recent loan signing David Wheeler could make his debut.

Blackpool have doubts over Ryan McLaughlin (hamstring) and Jimmy Ryan (knee), while Donervon Daniels could feature after returning to the club on deadline day.
