All you need to know about Carabao Cup clash

14 August 2018

Pompey have made a perfect start to the League One campaign, with maximum points taken from games against Luton and Blackpool.

But tonight the attention shifts to trying to progress into the second round of the Carabao Cup for the first time in three years.

The Blues lost to Championship opposition at this stage last season, but took Cardiff – who would go on to secure promotion – to extra-time in Wales.

They took the lead through a Sean Morrison own-goal, only for strikes from former Pompey players Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Greg Halford to turn the tie on its head.

It was a similar story for this evening’s visitors, who also lost to second tier opponents after extra-time, going down 3-1 at home to Brentford.

Neither side has ever lifted the League Cup, although Pompey have reached the quarter-finals on five occasions, most recently in 2010.

AFC Wimbledon have made an encouraging start to the current campaign, following up an opening day win at Fleetwood by drawing with Coventry last Saturday.

Pompey won both of last season’s league meetings, with their 2-0 win at Kingsmeadow preceding a 2-1 Boxing Day triumph at Fratton Park.

TEAM NEWS
Pompey will be without Dion Donohue (groin) and Nathan Thompson (knee), but Conor Chaplin has recovered from a hip problem.

Former Blues winger Andy Barcham is a doubt with a toe injury, but the visitors have no other fitness concerns.
