Match Preview: AFC Wimbledon v Pompey Women

Blues on the road in FA Cup

1 December 2018

Pompey Women will look to kick-start a run in the FA Cup on Sunday when they travel to AFC Wimbledon.

It is a repeat of their meeting at the same stage of last season’s competition, when goals from Sammy Quayle and skipper Amelia Southgate secured a 2-1 victory and safe passage into round three.

And the Blues will be looking to bounce back from a narrow league defeat at Cardiff in their last outing, with their performance in the Welsh capital arguably deserving more.

Nia Rees and Jasmine Simpson struck either side of the interval for the hosts, while Danielle Rowe’s first Pompey goal was not enough to salvage any points.

AFC Wimbledon currently ply their trade in the Women’s National League Division One South East – one level below the Blues.

They needed penalties to see off New London Lionesses in the first round, following a 3-3 draw after extra-time.

That secured a clash with Pompey at Carshalton’s War Memorial Sports Ground (SM5 2PW) on Sunday.

Defeat to Cardiff meant they slipped to ninth in the third tier of women’s football, so the cup will likely provide a nice distraction.

The Dons, meanwhile, have made a positive start to their league campaign, collecting 18 points from the opening 10 games and sitting a single point behind second-placed Billreicay.

Blues boss Jay Sadler has no new injury concerns ahead of the tie, with Rachel Panting and Mel Burns remaining sidelined.

And you can see if Pompey Women progress to the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday (2pm kick-off). Admission is free for all supporters.
