New Year Goal For Hawkins

Striker looking to keep hold of top spot

24 December 2018

Pompey can enjoy sitting top of the League One table at Christmas.

But Oli Hawkins now wants to make sure they remain at the summit when Big Ben chimes in the start of 2019.

A victory on the road at Gillingham on Boxing Day or Fleetwood three days later would guarantee that.

And Hawkins is hopeful that it will prove to be a Happy New Year for the Blues as they continue their promotion quest.

The striker said: “Everyone’s happy with the points total that we’re on at the moment and we want to build on that over the Christmas period.

“We’re top of the league and it would be great if we can make sure we’re still there at the start of January.

“The squad and management staff we’ve got this year just want to go out there and win every single game.

“At the moment that seems to be working out for us and so we’re keen to keep it going for as long as possible.”

Pompey visit Priestfield on the back of an impressive 3-1 win over Sunderland and Hawkins is not concerned that they lost to Gillingham earlier in the season

He said: “It’s just any other game at the end of the day, so we’re focusing on trying to get out of there with all three points.

“We’re concentrating on one game at a time – it’s all about Gillingham for now and then after that we’ll look forward to facing Fleetwood.

“It was a great performance and a vital three points against Sunderland after a loss and a draw in our previous two matches.

“But then a win doesn’t really mean as much if we don’t go to Gillingham and get something on Boxing Day.”
