Thompson: Everyone Needs To Be Ready

Midfielder interviewed in Southend programme

8 December 2018

Kenny Jackett has not needed to alter his successful side on too many occasions this season.

With Pompey approaching today’s clash with Southend on the back of a seven-match, it is no surprise that they have a settled team.

Ben Thompson is one of those who has been a regular for the Blues and has impressed since arriving on loan from Millwall in the summer.

But the midfielder believes those currently on the fringes will be required during a hectic period in December and January.

“You need every member of your squad ready,” he says in the official matchday magazine for today’s game. “I was in a similar position at Millwall last season and wasn’t even on the bench – I was watching from up in the stands.

“It’s not nice when you want to be out there every week, but it’s part of the job that we’re lucky enough to be paid to do. I’ve done my time out of the side and now I’m fortunate enough to be in the team.

“The Christmas period is always a difficult time with so many games and everyone’s going to be needed at some point because there will be injuries or players who simply need a rest.

"I’ve done my time out of the side and now I’m fortunate enough to be in the team."

“To have that depth in our group is an important thing to have – especially when you’re fighting to stay at the top of the league.”
