Close: Blackpool Our Only Focus

Midfielder not looking too far ahead

Victory at Fleetwood on Tuesday night moved Pompey to within a couple of points of the play-off places.

But Ben Close is certainly not getting ahead of himself with more than two months of the season still to play.

The Blues have matches against several promotion-chasing sides to look forward to in the coming weeks.

It is struggling Blackpool next up at Fratton Park, though, and that is all Close is focusing on.

The midfielder said: “We’re not really thinking about the play-offs at the moment – we’re just looking to win on Saturday.

“Whatever the squad is, our main focus is always on trying to pick up three points when we take to the pitch.

“It was really good for us to get back to winning ways against Fleetwood and everyone showed plenty of spirit to get a deserved victory.

“We’re missing a lot of players at the moment and it was a very young side – and an even younger bench – on Tuesday.

“You can see from the performance it didn’t seem to hinder us because we came together to put on a show.”

Close performed well alongside fellow youth product Adam May in the centre of midfield against Fleetwood.

He said: “We’ve played together a number of times in academy and reserve games, so it’s enjoyable to do it for the first team.

“The partnership seemed to work really well on Tuesday and so hopefully we’ll get the chance to continue it.”
