It was Adam May’s corner that led to Pompey’s goal in their 1-1 training ground friendly with Brighton.
And after that impressive cameo against Premier League opposition, the midfielder was in action again just a few hours later.
He played the full 90 minutes against Bognor – this time making even more of an impact in a 5-1 rout at Nyewood Lane.
Goals on three, 32 and 47 minutes saw him complete an impressive hat-trick and wrap up a productive afternoon.
May said: “It’s not every day that you score a hat-trick – or even a goal – so it was very good for me personally.
“I had a decent run-out in the morning, but felt I needed a few more minutes, so I asked to play in this game.
"I don’t normally get many chances in the game – let alone put three in the back of the net."
“The Premier League is a standard you want to get to, so Brighton was an important pre-season test for us.
“I then thought it was a professional performance from everyone at Bognor and a really good result for us.
“I don’t normally get many chances in the game – let alone put three in the back of the net, so I’m very happy.
"I never really find myself that far forward and I was pleased with how I took them, but on another night they might not have all gone in.”
Now May hopes he can take some momentum into the start of Pompey’s 2018/19 League One campaign.
He said: “Like every year I want to be in the team and doing as well as I can. It’s down to what I do in training and trying to impress in games like these.
“Now that I’ve got these goals it might be a confidence booster. I could get more chances and take them.”
