League One Newcomers: Barnsley

The second part of our look at the latest sides to join the third tier

2 June 2018

Pompey and Barnsley will face off next season for the first time in seven years following the Yorkshire outfit’s relegation from the Championship.

And you have to go all the back to the 1980/81 campaign to find the last time they met outside of the second tier.

The Blues triumphed 3-0 in a Fratton clash in May 2001 – with goals from Lee Bradbury, Gary O’Neil and Kevin Harper – to ensure Division One survival on the final day.

Barnsley were relegated on a dramatic final day to the Championship campaign, as they crashed to a 4-1 defeat at Derby.

It looked like they were going to stay up, only for Bolton to net two late goals against Nottingham Forest and leapfrog the Tykes in the table.

Barnsley are still without a manager following the departure of head coach Jose Morias, who left the day after the club were relegated.

He won just three of his 15 games in charge, having replaced Paul Heckingbottom in the Oakwell dug-out in February.

There are no former Blues players in the Barnsley squad.
