League One Newcomers: Burton

The third part of our look at the latest sides to join the third tier

6 June 2018

Pompey and Burton have met on just four occasions – with all those games taking place in the past five years.

Next season will see the first clashes outside League Two against a side that entered the Football League for the first time in 2009.

The Brewers spent two seasons in the Championship following back-to-back promotions, only to slip back down last term.

LAST SEASON
Burton’s fate was sealed on the final day of last season after they suffered a 2-1 defeat at 10-man Preston.

Chasing a winner that would have sealed their second tier survival, they instead conceded deep into stoppage-time to finish 23rd.

THE MANAGER
Nigel Clough remained in charge despite relegation and will be given the chance to guide Burton into the Championship for a second time.

He replaced Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink as boss at the Pirelli Stadium in December 2015, having previously spent more than 10 years in the role prior to spells at Derby and Sheffield United.

The son of Nottingham Forest legend Brian Clough, played under his father at the City Ground, also turning out for Liverpool, Manchester City and the Brewers.

POMPEY CONNECTIONS
Left-back Damien McCrory made three appearances for the Blues during an injury-hit loan spell at Fratton Park in the first half of the 2017/18 campaign.
