League One Newcomers: Luton

The fifth part of our look at the latest sides to join the third tier

13 June 2018

Pompey have a good recent record against Luton, having not lost in any of the past seven league meetings.

They won five of those encounters – including both games on the way to securing the 2016/17 fourth tier title.

But the Hatters did narrowly triumph in the first round of the FA Cup last term and went on to face Premier League outfit Newcastle.

LAST SEASON
Luton were favourites to win League Two at the start of last season, but were pipped to top spot by unfancied Accrington.

They achieved their ultimate aim of promotion, however, and will play in the third tier for the first time since 2008.

The Hatters were comfortably the division’s top scorers, with 8-2, 7-1 and 7-0 victories contributing towards a tally of 94 goals.

THE MANAGER
Nathan Jones led Luton to the play-offs in his first full season in charge at Kenilworth Road, before securing automatic promotion a year later.

He had a spell with the Hatters early in his playing career, but left without making a first team appearance.

Jones then had spells in Spain and also turned out for Southend, Brighton and Yeovil, starting his coaching career with the latter.

POMPEY CONNECTIONS
Sonny Bradley – who made 39 appearances during a single season at Fratton Park – has recently joined Luton from Plymouth.

Fellow defender Dan Potts had a brief spell on loan with the Blues from West Ham in 2013, playing six times.
