Oli Hawkins believes Pompey’s ability to grind out results bodes well for their chances of success this season.
League One’s table-toppers have won plenty of games by a single goal, including at Scunthorpe on Saturday.
Hawkins knows that the Blues will not always be able to blow teams away and is content to simply be racking up the victories.
Now the striker hopes to add to that tally when Walsall visit Fratton Park for a floodlit fixture this evening.
He said: “You’re not going to win by two or three goals every week and this is a really tough league.
“The most important thing for a team that wants to get promoted is just winning games, even if it’s 1-0 or 2-1.
"There’s more to come from us and Tuesday night is a good chance for us to bring our form back to Fratton Park."
“You need to be able to hold on to leads when the ball’s coming into your box and I think we’ve shown we can do that this season.
“That’s especially true for our games on the road, where people can see we’re capable of scoring goals and not conceding too many.
“Our record at home is not quite the same. It’s still not bad, but it’s something we can work on and look to improve.
“There’s more to come from us and Tuesday night is a good chance for us to bring our form back to Fratton Park.”
Hawkins has netted six times this season, with five of those strikes coming from his past seven appearances.
He said: “I’ve always known that I’m capable of scoring goals, but as long as I’m helping the team win games, then I’m happy enough.
“I wasn’t expecting to play as many matches as I have because of the competition in the squad and I’m feeling really confident at the moment.”
