Match preview: Crawley v Pompey

All you need to know about Checkatrade Trophy clash

9 October 2018

Pompey’s impressive unbeaten start to the League One season was ended by Gillingham at the weekend.

But tonight attention turns to visiting Crawley and trying to pick up points in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Jackett’s side got off to a good start in the competition last month, with a 4-0 Fratton thumping of the Gills ensuring they sit at the top of their group.

This evening’s opponents drew at home to Tottenham’s youngsters, although won the resulting penalty shoot-out to collect a bonus point.

It all means that victory at Broadfield Stadium would see Pompey reach the knockout stages with a game to spare.

Crawley are currently sitting ninth in the League Two standings and are just one point outside the play-off spots.

They have been beaten only once on their own turf so far this term – a 3-1 reverse to Stevenage back in August.

Gabriele Cioffi is the man in charge of the Reds, having been appointed last month following Harry Kewell’s defection to Notts County.

The most recent meeting between the two sides also took place in the Checkatrade Trophy, albeit at Fratton Park.

Matt Clarke, Oli Hawkins and Stuart O’Keefe all scored in a 3-1 triumph last season, while the Blues also won on their last competitive trip to Crawley in March 2017.

TEAM NEWS
Andre Green (knee) and David Wheeler (ankle) are both sidelined, although a fit-again Dion Donohue is set to play a part.

Jackett has said he will give fringe members of his squad and perhaps some younger players a chance to impress.

Former Pompey defender Bondz N’Gala could feature for Crawley, who will be without long-term injury victim Jimmy Smith (knee).
