Brown: We Never Lost Belief

Defender says spirit is high ahead of crucial couple of games

30 April 2019

A bleak start to 2019 saw Pompey go eight League One matches without tasting success.

But Lee Brown insists that the squad never lost belief they could get their Championship challenge back on track.

The Blues have been in fine form in recent weeks and are still in with a shout of securing an automatic promotion spot.

They must beat Peterborough at a packed Fratton Park this evening, however, to have any chance of catching Luton or Barnsley.

Brown said: “Everyone’s feeling positive, but the important thing is that we back that up on the pitch and get a good result.

“It should be a good atmosphere because there’s so much still to play for and we know what we need to do.

"We’re still in with a chance and if we do our job, then all the pressure is on Luton and Barnsley because it’s in their hands."

“Both teams need to win, so that sets it up to be a very interesting game and luckily we’re the home team.

“We’re still in with a chance and if we do our job, then all the pressure is on Luton and Barnsley because it’s in their hands.

“We never lost that spirit and belief – even in January and February – because things can change very quickly in football.

“Confidence helps and you’ve got to get a bit of luck along the way because there won’t always be great performances.”

Peterborough also have promotion aspirations and need a win on the south coast if they are to have any chance of securing a play-off berth.

Brown said: “Their front four is very good and probably up there with the best in the league, so we’ll have to be right on it.

“Anybody who thinks that it’s going to be an easy night at Fratton Park should know that won’t be the case.

“But our gaffer’s very level-headed and doesn’t get too high or too low. He’s been there and done it before and has that experience, which gives confidence to the lads.”
