Clarke: Relish The Task Ahead

Defender interviewed in Coventry programme

21 April 2019

The finish line is fast approaching in the race for automatic promotion for League One.

And Matt Clarke is delighted that Pompey are one of the runners in with a good chance of crossing it first.

Luton have almost got the job done, while the Blues appear to be competing with Barnsley and Sunderland for second spot.

Three points against Coventry on Easter Monday are likely to be required and Clarke is excited by the challenge.

“Last season was the only time since I’ve been here when we weren’t going for something in the final week and I really didn’t enjoy that,” he says in the official matchday magazine for the Fratton contest. “You always want something to aim for and we have to relish the task ahead.

“It would be massive to get this club into the Championship and that’s what everyone is working towards.

“It’s an exciting stage of the season, with only a few fixtures remaining and it means the next one currently is the be all and end all.

“Then when it’s over, you move to the one after that. You also have to check the results of the other teams and there are some who could do us a favour.”

To read the full interview – where Clarke discusses the recent Wembley triumph – make sure to buy a copy of the magazine.

Also in issue 27, Craig MacGillivray reveals his firsts and lasts and Anton Walkes has his general knowledge put to the test.

Fans can read exclusive columns from Mark Catlin, Kenny Jackett and Brett Pitman, while we continue to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Pompey’s first top-flight title success with a detailed look at the 1948/49 campaign.

There is also an in-depth analysis of Coventry, an interview with Mark Hateley and much, much more in a packed 84 pages.

And remember not to miss an issue this season, with the spine of magazine revealing a fantastic picture as the campaign progresses.
