Match Preview: Burton v Pompey

All you need to know about League One clash

18 April 2019

Burton v Pompey

Pompey begin what could be a crucial bank holiday weekend with a trip to the Pirelli Stadium to face Burton.

The importance of the occasion for Kenny Jackett’s side is highlighted by the presence of the Sky Sports cameras at both Easter fixtures.

They are behind Sunderland only on goal difference, with both clubs having a game in hand on Barnsley.

It is the Tykes – two points better off – who currently hold that all-important second spot behind leaders Luton, while Charlton are also in the automatic promotion mix.

The Blues’ next opponents are mathematically still in with a chance of maxing the play-offs, although it appears an unlikely scenario.

Nigel Clough’s Brewers have nine points to make up on sixth-placed Doncaster and only four games left to do so.

They are in a rich vein of form, however, failing to win just one of their past five fixtures – and helping Pompey in the process.

Burton beat Barnsley 3-1 on home soil at the start of the month and then held Sunderland to a draw in the north-east a few days later.

Unfortunately, though, they appear to have left it too late to make an instant return to the Championship following last season’s relegation.

The sides played out a 2-2 stalemate on the south coast earlier in the season, while the Blues lost 2-0 when they last visited the Pirelli Stadium in 2014.

TEAM NEWS
Dion Donohue (ankle) and Lloyd Isgrove (groin) are expected to miss the Easter fixtures, but Andy Cannon and Viv Solomon-Otarbor are available again.

The duo came through a reserve match at Bournemouth unscathed earlier in the week, although Jack Whatmough (knee) is still sidelined.

David Templeton (knee) will miss the rest of the season for Burton, who also have a doubt over Jake Buxton (calf).
