Blues progress in League Cup

25 August 2019

Pompey Women scored twice in extra-time to see off Watford in the determining round of the National League Cup.

Tamsin de Bunsen and Becki Bath both found the target following a goalless 90 minutes at a sunny PMC Stadium.

The result means that the Blues progress to the first round proper, while their visitors drop into the Plate competition.

Jay Sadler made three changes from the side that were beaten by the same opposition in the league seven days earlier.

Amelia Southgate returned to skipper the team, while there were also starts for Jade Bradley and Charmaine True, as Jazz Younger, Eilidh Currie and Danielle Rowe all dropped to the bench.

And the hosts began the contest brightly, with Nina Wilson saving from Jade Widdows before Hayley Bridge had a shot blocked.

Bath then tried her luck from the edge of the box and saw the ball deflected safely into Wilson’s arms.

True almost broke the deadlock after beating the offside trap midway through the first half, but her low effort fizzed narrowly past the post.

Pompey kept knocking on the door and Wilson did well to palm the ball clear when Bath was picked out at the far post.

But they soon had a narrow escape at the other end, as Katie O’Leary found the target, only to have her celebrations cut short by an offside flag.

The hosts kept pushing forward once the action restarted and True’s powerful shot went over, while another attempt was comfortably claimed by Wilson.

They thought the deadlock had been broken when Widdows tapped in Roxy Lee-Stewart’s cross, but again the linesman’s flag was raised.

Not that it was all one-way traffic, though, and Hannah Haughton had to claw away a header from Helen Ward.

Sadler made a double switch on 66 minutes, with Widdows and Bradley making way for Rowe and de Bunsen.

It was Katie James who was next to have a shot, however, and a long-range effort flew over the crossbar.

There were also chances for de Bunsen and Lee-Stewart, as the Blues tried to force a later winner inside regulation time.

But the opening goal finally did arrive early in extra-time – and it was worth waiting for, with a superb DE BUNSEN strike from the edge of the box leaving Wilson helpless.

And the advantage was soon doubled, as BATH stole possession, burst forward and fired home off the underside of the crossbar.

de Bunsen might even have added a gloss to the scoreline late on, but her effort was pushed clear by Wilson.
