Evans: A Game To Enjoy

Midfielder looks ahead to Luton test

29 January 2019

Gareth Evans is relishing the opportunity to take on Luton in a top-of-the-table League One contest this evening.

While Pompey were in FA Cup action on Saturday, their opponents won at Southend to replace them at the summit.

No side have claimed all three points from visits to Kenilworth Road this term, while the Hatters are unbeaten in the league since the middle of October.

But Evans is confident that the Blues can bring their good form to a halt and is looking forward to the contest.

He said: “We’ll just treat it as another game and we always fancy ourselves against any side in this division.

“But if you can’t enjoy games like this, then you shouldn’t be playing football. We’ve sold out the away allocation as usual and hopefully we can pay them back by taking the points.

"It’s all about consistency and continuing what we’ve been doing for most of the season – finding ways to win football matches."

“Luton have done really well and you’re never sure what’s going to happen when there’s a managerial change.

“They seem to have coped with it well, though, and just carried on where they left off – they’re in a decent vein of form.

“But we’re in a good position in the league and have still got two cup competitions to compete in as well, so we’re enjoying ourselves.

“There are a lot of games coming up, but we’ll take each one as it comes and do all the right stuff off the pitch to prepare.

“It’s all about consistency and continuing what we’ve been doing for most of the season – finding ways to win football matches.”

A goal from Jamal Lowe ensured that Pompey beat Luton at Fratton Park on the opening day of the season.

Evans said: “I was sat on the bench for 90 minutes for that one – I can remember that!

“It was Luton’s first game back in League One and a real test for them, but they looked a really good team and you knew they’d be around the promotion places.”
