Blues begin pre-season with convincing victory

14 July 2019

Pompey Women began their pre-season schedule with an 18-0 annihilation of National League South West side Swindon at New College.

Jay Sadler named several of his new signings in the squad for the first friendly, with three of them starting for the away side.

Charmaine True, Roxy Lee-Stewart and Hayley Bridge all featured, with Laura Ingram named among the substitutes in Wiltshire.

And the Blues were quick to open the scoring, as a cross was whipped in by their triallist and inadvertently turned into the net by a Robins defender.

The lead was soon doubled by Jade WIDDOWS, who cut inside and convincingly found the bottom corner of the net.

Two became three inside the opening 10 minutes, with LEE-STEWART receiving a through ball from Bridge and slotting home.

Jade BRADLEY got in on the act midway through the first half, firing in a low effort after Eilidh Currie had won possession in the centre of the pitch.

A flurry of goals followed, with WIDDOWS scoring from a first-time shot and skipper Amelia SOUTHGATE audaciously lobbing the keeper from near the halfway line.

Becki BATH then caught the Swindon stopper off her line, while TRUE found the net from the edge of the box on 39 minutes.

And there was still time for yet another goal for the rampant visitors before the interval, as TRUE again scored with a 20-yard effort.

The Blues were quick out of the blocks following the restart, as WIDDOWS collected a pass from substitute Emma-Jane May and completed her hat-trick.

TRUE also made sure of a treble with a finish that went in off the woodwork, while INGRAM then marauded forward to add her name to the scoresheet.

Bradley soon found TRUE to round the keeper and slot into an empty net for her fourth goal of the afternoon and Pompey's 13th.

CURRIE got in on the act on 76 minutes, making her way into the hosts' half and smasing an effort into the back of the net from long-range.

It was a prolific performance from WIDDOWS, who added her fourth by streching to convert a Bradley cross at the back post.

There was another flurry of goals towards the end of the contest, with BATH lobbing the keeper before a Bekah Tonks delivery forced another own-goal.

And it was TONKS who completed the scoring soon after Bath had neatly chipped a free-kick to the far post.
