Pompey have been drawn at home to Birmingham in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
The Championship club will visit Fratton Park in the week commencing August 12.
Assistant manager Joe Gallen said: "You're always looking for a home draw, so we're pleased with that.
"It's also nice to be playing a side from a higher division. It makes us the underdogs and it's an exciting tie for the players and the supporters.
"Earning promotion to the Championship is our number one priority, but we'll look to progress as far as we can."
"We enjoyed runs in the other two cup competitions last season and always look to do well in every game we're involved in.

Pompey have not met Birmingham since both sides were in the second tier during the 2011/12 campaign.
Goals from Chris Maguire, David Norris, Kelvin Etuhu and Marko Futacs saw the Blues secure a 4-1 victory at Fratton Park that term.
It will be the first ever League Cup clash between the pair, although there have been several FA Cup fixtures.
The most recent of those came in 2010, with Pompey winning 2-0 on their way to a Wembley final.
Both sides fell at the first hurdle last season, as the Blues were beaten at home by AFC Wimbledon, while Birmingham lost at Reading.
