Blues Back In Action

Find out who was involved in the first day of training

27 June 2019

The sun was out to welcome the Pompey squad back for the first day of pre-season training.

Kenny Jackett’s players will spend the next five weeks preparing for the 2019/20 League One campaign.

August 3 is the date circled in everyone’s diary, with a trip to Shrewsbury getting the serious business started.

Before that, however, the Blues will be worked hard with a series of training sessions and friendly matches.

But there was a not a football in sight on the opening day following the summer break, with fitness work the priority.

That initially took place on one of the training pitches at Pompey’s Copnor base before continuing in the gym.

Among those getting in shape for the new season were four of the club’s five summer signings – James Bolton, Paul Downing, Ellis Harrison and, most recent arrival, Sean Raggett.

Ryan Williams, who completed a south coast switch the previous day, will link up with his new team-mates on Monday.

Jack Whatmough watched proceedings, although the defender has his own fitness programme as he continues to recover from a knee injury.

Bryn Morris sat out with a groin niggle, but is expected to return to action on Monday, while Christian Burgess was absent through illness.

The only other player not present was Ronan Curtis, who has been given extra time off after having last season extended by international duty.
