Paul Downing has plenty of experience when it comes to battling at the top end of League One.
The defender – who recently became Pompey’s third summer signing – helped Blackburn secure automatic promotion a couple of years ago.
He was then on loan at Doncaster when they suffered an agonising play-off penalty defeat to Charlton last term.
Now Downing wants another crack at securing Championship football with his new club after penning a three-year deal.
He said: “We had plenty of firepower at Blackburn and scored a lot of goals, but also had a solid foundation to build on.
“There were a lot of clean sheets that we kept, which is always an important factor in winning matches.
"Hopefully I can take the experience that I’ve had from those seasons into what’s coming up at Pompey."
“Consistency is also something you need and when you do have a defeat, you want that ability to bounce back.
“Hopefully I can take the experience that I’ve had from those seasons into what’s coming up at Pompey.”
Downing played a few Championship games with Blackburn last term and wants to do the same with Pompey.
He said: “It is a bigger leap, with the size of the football clubs and there are obviously better and faster players.
“But you can play sides from higher divisions in the cup competitions and often teams from League One will win.
“It’s certainly not unbridgeable. It’s something I’ve had a taste of in the past and want to experience again.”
