League One Newcomers: Ipswich

The latest part of our look at the latest sides to join the third tier

12 June 2019

Pompey v Ipswich

Ipswich are preparing to compete in the third tier of English football for the first time in more than 60 years.

They had been in the Championship for 17 successive campaigns before suffering relegation last season.

Pompey have never previously met the Tractor Boys at this level, with all their previous league contests taking place in the second tier.

A 1-1 home draw with Birmingham sealed Ipswich’s fate with four games of the Championship campaign still to play.

They finished rock bottom on 31 points and tasted league success just five times, with 16 draws and 25 defeats.

Paul Lambert took over from Paul Hurst last October, but was unable to oversee a reversal in fortunes.

The former Scotland international – part of the Dortmund side that won the Champions League in 1997 – guided Norwich to League One promotion in 2010.

There are no former Blues players in the Ipswich squad.
