Rotherham’s previous three seasons have ended in either relegation or promotion – and they will be hoping to secure the latter next term.
They won both meetings against Pompey when the sides were in League One during the 2017/18 campaign.
But it has not been a regular fixture in recent years, with the clubs sharing a division just four times since 1981.
LAST SEASON
Rotherham’s Championship return – secured by winning the League One play-offs – lasted a single season.
They finished 22nd in the table, with relegation confirmed by a narrow defeat at West Brom in their penultimate fixture.
THE MANAGER
Paul Warne took charge of the Millers in November 2016 following the departure of current Pompey boss Kenny Jackett.
He was unable to keep them in the Championship, leading them back there the following season, only to suffer another relegation last term.
Warne made almost 300 appearances during two spells as a Rotherham player, also turning out for Wigan, Oldham and Yeovil.
POMPEY CONNECTIONS
Striker Michael Smith was Rotherham’s joint top scorer last term with eight goals and made 37 appearances for Pompey between 2016 and 2017.
Left-back Joe Mattock had a spell on loan at Fratton Park when the Blues were in the Championship, while Blues academy graduate Ryan Williams recently left the Millers.
