Dennis Bags Brace In Friendly Win

Blues secure 3-1 win over Royal Navy side

19 March 2019

Louis Dennis bagged a brace as Pompey secured a 3-1 friendly victory over a Royal Navy side at Burnaby Road.

He scored a goal in each half and also saw a penalty saved, while academy prospect Leon Maloney was also on target.

Dion Donohue and Anton Walkes both had to come off during the game, although the Blues are hopeful that there is no long-term damage.

Pompey broke the deadlock when the home defence failed to deal with Matt Casey’s long pass and DENNIS took advantage to slot home.

And Lloyd Isgrove almost doubled the lead before the break, only for his long-range curling effort to cannon against the post.

He combined well with Dennis in the second half and although Adam May’s path to goal was blocked, MALONEY collected the ball to score.

DENNIS then wrapped things up, cutting along the edge of the box and playing a one-two with Stan Bridgman before bending the ball into the net.

Shawn Benjamin pulled one back for the Royal Navy after the visitors had failed to deal with a corner.

And when Bridgman was crudely brought down in the box late on, Dennis saw his spot-kick saved to deny the forward a hat-trick.

First team coach Jake Wigley said: “We’re happier with how we played in the second half because we showed a lot more intensity on and off the ball.

“We were able to stretch the play and get runners in behind our opponents, while we probably should had a few more goals.

"The lads applied themselves well overall and it was useful for our squad players to get some time on the pitch because they could be called upon at any minute."

“It was disappointing to concede from a set-piece and the surface was difficult, although that was the same for both teams.

“The lads applied themselves well overall and it was useful for our squad players to get some time on the pitch because they could be called upon at any minute.

“Dion came off because he felt his groin a bit, but we’re hoping it’s not too bad, while Anton was substituted as a precaution.”

Pompey: Bass; Walkes (Johnston 46), Casey, Hancott (Robb 83), Haunstrup; May, Donohue (Kavanagh 39); Maloney, Read (Whiting 83), Isgrove (Bridgman 77); Dennis
