Burgess: Ready For The Challenge

Defender looking forward to the play-offs after Accrington test

3 May 2019

Christian Burgess is looking to end the regular season on a high before getting ready for a play-off battle.

Pompey will secure third spot in the League One table if they can beat Accrington at Fratton Park on Saturday.

That would see them at home for the second leg against whoever finishes sixth – either Doncaster or Peterborough.

And after missing out on automatic promotion to Luton and Barnsley, Burgess is ready for the next test.

The defender said: “There’s a little bit of frustration that we couldn’t take things to the last day and really make those teams work for it.

“It was gutting for us and the fans, especially because the atmosphere against Peterborough on Tuesday was unbelievable – it’s one of those nights you’ll remember for a long time.

"Everybody in the squad has big-game experience and that can stand us in good stead for what’s coming up."

“But it’s up to us to take on the challenge of the play-offs, which still provides an excellent opportunity to get promoted.

“We want to get this club to where it should be, so we have to dust ourselves down and be ready to go again.

“It’s important that we beat Accrington on Saturday to put ourselves on 90 points – then it’s hopefully three more games.

“There are some good sides and you expect to play top teams, but we just have to focus on our own performances.

“The boys have really stepped up this season and we’ve played some decent stuff. There’s a group of players here who are hungry for success.

“Everybody in the squad has big-game experience and that can stand us in good stead for what’s coming up.”
